TANK
A gentle giant
with the biggest heart.
Tank spent more than a year in foster care before finding his forever home. Yet he never stopped showing the world exactly who he was.
He was kind, patient, funny, and endlessly loving. To the justice-involved youth he worked with and the family who welcomed him home, he was simply a gentle soul.
We first knew Tank as a dog who had already proven his big heart long before anyone gave him a permanent place. That same heart made him a natural teacher and companion. Even before people fully understood how much he had to give, Tank just kept being the mindful, loving dog they needed.

His appetite was legendary, but the only thing bigger was his heart.
He loved every possible treat and had a playful habit of discovering a few things that definitely weren’t food.
He was kind to everyone, people and dogs alike, and being near him just made them feel safer.
Teaching Safety That Lasts
A Gentle Giant
In 2016 Tank went to school all across Monterey County. He worked with justice-involved youth at Kinship Center, Rancho Cielo Youth Campus, and San Jose Juvenile Hall. There the young people ran their own clicker training classes with him.
They adored him. Yet no one stepped forward to adopt him. So UnChained kept finding new programs to give him more chances to be seen.
UnChained’s programs gave the youth a way to turn what society had branded as difficult into strengths they could carry forward.
Tank showed them that the very things others misunderstood could become the foundation of a safer and more hopeful future for everyone involved.
A Safer Community Begins With Trust
Tank walked into every room already carrying a label. The youth knew that feeling well. It let him connect with them right away.
The Love He Carried Home
Tank came home after more than a year in foster care and simply kept being the dog he had always been. He loved every treat he could reach and plenty of things that were never meant to be treats. The only thing bigger than his appetite was his heart.
He was kind to every person and every dog who crossed his path. He helped three foster dogs learn to feel safe again. When Frannie arrived from the wild as a recent amputee, Tank showed her how to be a dog. He stayed patient with the stepkids even when his big frame pulled hard on walks, his whole body swinging with love for his humans in a way that showed he didn’t quite know his own strength.
And when Ela was born he stayed close, always watching. If she cried and Yasemin wasn’t right there, Tank made sure she knew. From their adventures across Rhode Island to Hawaii, Portland, and back to Seattle, the family felt lucky every single day they had him.
Tank passed on March 2, 2026, one month before his twelfth birthday. The space he left is still felt, but so is everything he taught. The same gentleness, trust, and love he gave to his justice-involved youth in 2016 continued right into family life.
A Life In Motion
These memories carry the story better than words alone can. They show Tank as he was: grounded, funny, watchful, loved, and always close to the ones who needed him.
UnChained was blessed to have known Tank and to have had him with us in our programs. Simply by existing as he did in his mortal frame, he left waves of love that will continue to reverberate beyond the people he met.
"Where that brick-like body lacked any kind of grace or agility, he made up for it in his adoration of all people."

Love Kept
Moving Through Him
Tank showed what this work is really about.
When a dog is seen beyond any label, his presence can become a bountiful source of reassurance for everyone around him. He loved so openly and completely that it was a testament to how much love one dog could hold.
The youth who practiced trust and compassion with him carried that forward. The dogs he later helped felt safer because of it.
His family felt it every single day.
Give in
Tank’s memory
Tank lived a life shaped by love and the people who chose to stay with him. In his memory, your gift helps UnChained continue the work he made possible.
When you give in his honor, more dogs and justice-involved youth get to experience the same trust, safety, and connection that defined his story through our programs.
Every gift propels his love further into the world.
“We lost Tank on March 2, 2026, just a month before his 12th birthday.
His gentle heart keeps teaching us what love can carry forward. Thank you for remembering Tank with us.
